Networking doesn't need to be intimidating, it can be as simple as talking with someone who shares your scientific interests. A professional society is simply a group of individuals who have similar interests, and many societies have regional meetings that encourage student involvement. Internships are a great way to get experience and exposure to individuals who are working in a particular area.
