Research Interests
The role of marine mammals in their environment and their interactions with
humans.
In my lab, we are currently attempting to describe the abundance, movements
and foraging habits of harbor seals in the San Juan Islands to assess their
potential impact on fish populations. To accomplish this, in conjunction
with our collaborators, we count seals from the air, collect seal poop to
see what they eat and place
tags on seals to follow their movements via
satellite. Other research includes interactions between harbor seals and
downtown development in Bellingham and New Zealand fur seals and tourists in
Kaikoura.
About Me
I am an Associate Professor in Biology and Science Education at Western Washington University. Originally from Mexico City, I have found my second home in the Pacific Northwest with my wife Lisa and our dog Koura. I love playing soccer and the guitar, and a good hike in a remote place
