The selection process for 2008-2009 scholarships is NOW underway.

Email or drop the completed application(s) in the mailbox of Dr. Acevedo-Gutierrez in the Biology Office. Dr. Acevedo's email is acevedo@biol.wwu.edu. Applications are due April 11th, 2008 at 4pm.

Biology Merit Scholarships

Declared Biology majors with a strong academic record (a minimum 3.3 overall GPA, except Biology Student Athlete Scholarship) are invited to apply for these scholarships, ranging from $250 to $1000.

Applicants must have completed the General Biology 200 series and at least 2 upper-division Biology courses, which must include at least one of the following core courses: Biology 321, 323, 325, or 340.

++++++Please note that a single application form applies to ALL Biology Merit Scholarships. If you qualify, you may apply for more than one scholarship by checking the appropriate boxes on the form.++++++++

Scholarships available to undergraduate students only:
Hodgson Family Scholarships.   One or more scholarships are available for biology majors interested in horticulture and/or using horticultural studies to meet their educational goals.

Holzman Biology Scholarships.   One or more scholarships available for full-time, upper division undergraduate students who have outstanding scholastic records.

Biology Department Tuition Waiver Scholarships.   Applicants must be full-time Biology majors of superior academic ability.  Financial need is NOT used as a criterion for selection.

Rathmann Family Foundation Scholarships.   One or more scholarships available to undergraduate students who show exceptional merit and financial need.  Available during even years (2008-2009).

Frances and Alfred Baker Memorial Scholarship.  Available for undergraduate students pursuing studies in aquatic biology or environmental health, and showing exceptional merit and financial need.

Biology Student Athlete Scholarship. Available to full-time Biology majors who participate in any intercollegiate sport at Western.  The student athlete must have completed the Biology 200-level core plus two required 300-level Biology courses and have an overall GPA of at least 3.0.

Scholarships available to undergraduate students and others:
Biology Faculty Fellowship Fund. Available to undergraduate or graduate students, post-doctoral fellows or visiting scholars.  Applicants must have an outstanding scholastic record and evidence of research potential, such as an acceptable research project.

Declan Barron Memorial Scholarship.   Available to upper-division undergraduate or graduate students  Applicants must have an outstanding scholastic record.  Preference will be given to highly motivated students who demonstrate potential for continued strong academic performance in biology.

 
Other Scholarships

Bob & Eleanor Grant Trust Scholarship.

Provides scholarships for first-generation college students studying natural or environmental sciences. The Trust can provide scholarships of up to $15,000 per year that are renewable based upon satisfactory student progress. The priority of selection criteria is: 1) need 2) passion 3) merit.

This scholarship is offered by the College of Sciences and Technology to students in the college, but the Department of Biology nominates the student.

Oscar Edwin Olson Science Scholarship.  Eligible students must be declared majors in Biology, the child of single, divorced or widowed parents sometime during their first eighteen years, and eligible for financial need.

These scholarships are offered directly by the College of Sciences and Technology to students in the college.  Please apply directly to the College through their website (http://www.wwu.edu/depts/cst/cst_site/scholarship.htm)

Elizabeth M. Murphy Scholarship.  Eligible students must be single women who have dependent children and financial need.  Awardees must make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.

Marion VanNostrand Scholarship.  Eligible students must be single women who have dependent children and financial need.  Awardees must make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.

 

The following scholarship is offered by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences to students in the College of Sciences and Technology, but the Department of Biology nominates the student.

Paul Woodring Scholarship (click for application).   Eligible students must be juniors or seniors during the academic year after the award and should seem most likely to make substantial contributions to mankind as a result of their liberal education.

 

This scholarship is offered directly by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences to students in the college.  Obtain the application on this website and apply directly to the College.

Ron and Rita Spelhaug Aviation Scholarship.   Eligible students must be preparing for a career in aviation or a related field.  Applications are available in the office of the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (Environmental Studies 603).
